Advertising watchdogs are set to relax rules governing the advertisement of condoms on television, but have deferred a decision on advertisements for abortion clinics, The Guardian has reported.
The new regulations will see the historic watershed ban on condoms being lifted so they can be advertised at any time other than around programmes popular with young children.
The wide-ranging review, the deepest since advertising codes were first developed around 50 years ago, also includes proposals to knuckle down on ads that promote violent video games and make questionable environmental claims.
Around 30,000 responses were gathered by the consultation prior to the publication of the plans, with condom and abortion advertising being a particularly hot issue.
Health officials hope the revised rules will help reduce teenage pregnancy rates.
