About The Global Safe Abortion Website
In October 2007, Marie Stopes International hosted the seminal Global Safe Abortion Conference in London, in association with Ipas and Abortion Rights. The conference brought over 700 delegates from diverse backgrounds in 60 countries. It was the first event of its kind to focus exclusively on the issue of abortion.
In his opening address, Marie Stopes International’s Chief Executive, Dana Hovig, assured delegates that the conference was just one example of a new concerted effort towards eradicating unsafe abortion worldwide.
“There is a growing consensus and momentum around this issue. I fundamentally believe that the wind is at our backs.” Dana Hovig, Chief Executive, Marie Stopes International, October 2007, London
www.globalsafeabortion.org represents the next phase in Marie Stopes International’s contribution to that global effort.
The aim is that this site will become the first point of call for anyone interested in the issue of abortion from a pro-choice perspective:
- advocates, activists and grass roots campaigners
- lawyers, politicians and civil servants
- doctors, health workers and administrators
- service providers and pressure groups
- NGOs, academics and members of civil society
- students and concerned citizens
Over time this site aims to provide a secure and welcoming space for exchanging ideas and information and sharing knowledge and intelligence. It will be a source of news, comment and debate, constantly updated and always engaging.
Most importantly, through its country specific pages with content managed by in-country partner organisations, its extensive library with resources and materials from a huge range of sources and its innovative forum discussion threads, www.globalsafeabortion.org is a truly collaborative venture, in the spirit of collective purpose and endeavour which made the 2007 conference such a unifying and successful event.
